History on Tents The oldest known tents come from Siberia, Lapland, Iceland and Alaska. In Canada and the United States the native tents were known as teepees. Tents were originally made from animal skins. In the earlier years of history most of the tents were made from goat or goat hair. In Canadian history most teepees were made from buffalo or deer hide. First Nations people have a very high respect for mother nature and when they went hunting they used every part of the animal, saving the hides for the tents. As a young boy I remember very clearly going to many Pow wows with my father. There would be hundreds of teepees where everyone would stay for a couple of weeks during these celebrations. I would always help my Dad put up our teepee and I have been intrigued by tents ever since. After 20 years in the business I still have the greatest respect for where tents have originated from. Tents have mostly been used for accommodation, but in this century tents have become very popular for large gatherings of people and special events. In Vancouver, with our very rainy weather there has been a huge increase in the need for tents of every size for small gatherings to huge events. Tents have moved into a different era where they have become multipurpose and not just temporary accommodation. History is important and as such it is important for me as a First Nations person to ensure that we blend our tradition and customs with modern times. As such most of our tents will carry coast salish art work on them and will be blessed in our traditional way before they are used or rented out. We would like to give thanks to all those animals in nature who gave their lives many years ago so tents could be part of this modern time. |
